17th I Chronicles Chapter 17 Chapter 20 A Gift For The God Who Has Everything

In today’s reading, King David expressed his desire to build a house for the Lord. While Kings were partly known for the great structures attributed to their reign, David did not seek this task as an attribute by which men should account his greatness. He was not looking for fame among kings. David’s heart was toward in God in honoring Him for the favor shown to David and all his house. He felt so blessed, that He wanted to do something special for God, to show his appreciation.

God understood the intention of David’s heart. God accepted David’s desire to give Him an excellent gift, without requiring David to fulfill the building of it.

Wesley wrote:

Must he [David] think, that his purpose [to build God an house] was in vain, and that he should lose the reward of [having built] it? No: it being God’s act that prevented the execution of it, he shall be as fully recompensed as if it had been done.

Think about it: Can you imagine that even a person who is wealthy appreciates a heartfelt gift? Well, what do you give the God who has everything? Would it be easier to decide if you knew what He wanted?

He hath shewed thee, O man, what [is] good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Micah 6:8
