Causes & Effects

In this section, you will identify sources of obstacles to finding your purpose. You will add three new columns to your Elements Chart, in order to complete this activity.

A good doctor, who first attempts to isolate the source of your pain, is also looking for the most efficient route to restoring your health. Likewise, identifying the source of problems and challenges in your everyday life, can help you to focus your resources in creating more effective solutions.

Use the following procedure to update your Elements Chart.

  1. Add a “Q Number” column to your Elements Chart. For purposes of this series, a “Q number” represents a question you are trying to answer (identified in step 4 of, Getting Started: Your Purpose Tree) and corresponds to a numbered branch of your Purpose Tree.
    .
  2. Add a “C Number” column to your Elements Chart. For purposes of this series, a “C number” represents the cause of an event (on a row) of your Elements Chart.
    .
  3. Add an “E Number” column to your Elements Chart. For purposes of this series, an “E number” represents an effect caused by an event (on a row of your Elements Chart) with a “C number.”
    .
  4. Using the timeline you created in the previous activity, bold text any Begin Date corresponding to a problem or challenge currently brewing in your life. These could either be recent, or long-past events, whose effects are currently causing problems or challenges.
    .
  5. Highlight any event (row) of your Elements Chart that has a “corresponding number” on your Purpose Tree (assigned in the first Purpose Tree activity).
    .
  6. For every highlighted event (row), enter the “corresponding number” in the associated Q Number cell of that row
    .
  7. For every highlighted event (row) with a Begin Date in bold text (from step 4), look for causal elements (i.e., look for elements that could have caused the problems or challenges identified in step 4).
    .
Notes: A row that is not highlighted in this activity, which also has a Begin Date in bold text, could indicate a currently relevant problem or challenge which was not identified in the first Purpose Tree activity; and or is not represented by a numbered branch. Review this element to determine whether it is in fact currently relevant to you. If so, add it accordingly.
    .
  8. For any causal element (row) identified in step 7, enter (or write) the row number of the causal element, in the E Number cell of that causal element’s row.
    .
  9. For any causal element (event) identified in step 7, enter (or write) the number(s) of the row(s) corresponding to the event(s) caused, in the E Number cell of the causal element’s row. This identifies effects of the causal element. If a causal element is the precursor to several effects, list each additional (caused event’s) row number in the E Number cell also, separating row numbers with a comma.
    .
  10. For any row number listed in an E Number cell (effect), enter (or write) the corresponding causal element’s row number in the C Number cell of that (effect’s) row.

Remember to continue your journal activity each day.
