Your Purpose Tree

This section will introduce you to Your Purpose Tree, the third living tool in this empowerment series. Your Purpose Tree will help you to identify and understand the role of history and elements beyond your control which influence your path to your purpose.

Finding your purpose is about understanding who you are, who God is, and how you are related. What you already know about your purpose is not likely a one-line statement with little backstory. Rather, it is a collection of details, much like the mass summary of information found in an encyclopedia. Not only can you explore various concepts; you can extract complexities and break them down into root words. You can examine elements that describe you, individually. You can define these parts, then combine their definitions meaningfully.

ACTIVITY #3 – Creating Your Purpose Tree

For this activity, you will need your purpose journal, elements chart, and purpose tree worksheet – which you will complete. The latter is a third living tool. This tool resembles a common family graph with the added element of a timeline. If you do not have the workbook that accompanies this series, use your purpose journal or a blank sheet of paper.

In later activities, you will apply Biblical precepts to each of the living tools you have created. Use the following procedure to begin your Purpose Tree.

1. On your purpose tree worksheet, draw a picture of a tree without leaves. Include the tree trunk, roots and branches.
2. Write your name on the tree trunk and personalize this image as your Purpose Tree.
3. Review the information recorded in your Purpose Journal and on your Elements Chart.
4. For any element you have identified; and for which you still have the question, why?, assign a number to that element. Beginning with the number one, do not assign a number more than once.
5. On your Purpose Tree, assign a number to each branch, until you have used all of the numbers corresponding to elements in step 4. If your tree does not include enough branches such that each branch will have only one number, add branches accordingly.

Remember to continue your journal activity each day, adding to your living tool as necessary.
