Devotional Reading: Deuteronomy 23:21-23 AMP
21 “When you make a [d]vow to the Lord your God, you shall not delay to pay it, for He will most certainly require it of you, and a delay would cause you to sin. 22 But if you refrain from making a vow, that would not be [counted as] sin in you. 23 You shall be careful to perform that [vow] which passes your lips, just as you have made a voluntary vow to the Lord your God, just as you have promised with your own words (mouth).
Song: I Made a Vow to the The Lord (And I Won’t Take It Back)
Devotional: “A Vow”
The vow is sacred and should not be entered haphazardly. Unfortunately, some vows are made in duress or a state of bargaining such as, “God if you do this, I will…” These vows tend to be the most troublesome because they are often over-stated, placing the person under extreme responsibility when God keeps His side of the deal.
I have repented of vows made in haste, things that I could not deliver after promising so much. I have learned not to make so many promises. It is written that to not make a vow is better than to default in fulfilling the vow.
Rather than empty promises, it is written that we should owe no man anything but love.
Romans 13:8-10
8 Owe nothing to anyone except to love and seek the best for one another; for he who [unselfishly] loves his neighbor has fulfilled the [essence of the] law [relating to one’s fellowman]. 9 The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not covet,” and any other commandment are summed up in this statement: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor [it never hurts anyone]. Therefore [unselfish] love is the fulfillment of the Law.
